Sámi voices and symphonic soundscapes across borders
In February 2026, Norrlandsoperan’s Symphony Orchestra toured Finland together with Sámi artists Katarina Barruk and Hildá Länsman. Presented through Arctic Pulse, the tour was part of Arctic Music Circles’ work to strengthen cross-border collaboration and create more visibility for Sámi and minority-language music.
The tour visited Musiikkitalo in Helsinki, Kotkan Konserttitalo in Kotka and Turku Concert Hall in Turku, reaching more than 1,300 people.
Led by conductor Bjarni Frímann, the programme brought together the artists’ own songs, arranged for orchestra, with joint joik and a freely improvised finale over the closing note of Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony. The concerts created a meeting between contemporary Sámi artistic expression, Ume Sámi language, joik and the symphonic tradition.
For Arctic Pulse, the tour is a strong example of what cross-border collaboration can make possible. It connected a Swedish regional orchestra, Sámi artists from Sweden and Finland, Finnish concert halls and audiences in three different cities. It also gave Sámi and minority-language music space in large concert hall settings, reaching audiences beyond the artists’ home regions.
The tour received attention in Finnish press, with reviewers highlighting the strength of the collaboration across genres and the emotional power of the performances.
Journalist Hanna Kangassalo joined the tour and wrote a Swedish-language article for Norrlandsoperan, following the artists and orchestra on the road in Finland. The article gives a close and human perspective on the artistic collaboration and on what it means to sing, create and perform in an Indigenous language.

The collaboration will also continue beyond the project period. Katarina Barruk has been appointed Artist in Residence at Norrlandsoperan for 2027–2028, building further on the artistic relationship strengthened through Arctic Pulse.
The tour was carried out by Norrlandsoperan within the framework of Arctic Pulse, with support from Interreg Aurora, Region Västerbotten and Umeå Municipality.
